THE police safely rescued two people and arrested a hostage taker, who turned out to be accused of murder, in Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay province, the police reported.
Police Information Officer-in-Charge Dahlan Samuddin identified the rescued hostages as Lily Verdago, 38, and her daughter, Lyza, 14, of Magdaup village, Ipil town.
The arrested hostage taker was identified as Elton Guilayan, who has a standing warrant of arrest for murder issued by the Court in Imelda, Zamboanga Sibugay.
Samuddin said Guilayan, armed with a pair of scissor, held hostage Verdago and her daughter inside a bus at the Rural Transit Management, Incorporated (RTMI) terminal in the village of Sanito, Ipil, around 6:30 p.m. Monday.
Samuddin said the security guard of the bus terminal identified as Jose Luna, 41, tried to pacify the suspect but was ignored, promoting the guard to call for police assistance.
Police Office 1 (PO1) Florian Dandana, who is assigned as a bus marshal, advised Guilayan to calm down and surrender but was instead attacked by the suspect.
The suspect grappled for possession of Dandana's issued Armalite rifle and managed to squeeze the trigger and fired five times prompting PO1 Abdulgafor Matugol, another bus marshal, to shoot the suspect.
Guilayan was hit in the leg and was rushed to the hospital for treatment, while the mother and daughter victims were safely rescued, the police said.
The suspect will be facing another criminal charge in connection with the hostage taking late Monday, the police added.
