Abu Sayyaf frees another Indonesian sailor

CAMP NAVARRO, Zamboanga City -- The Abu Sayyaf bandits released on Thursday, September 22, another Indonesian sailor they seized over a month ago in the high seas of Sabah, a military official said.

Released was Herman Bin Manggak, according to Western Mindanao Command (Westmincom) spokesperson Filemon Tan Jr.

Manggak was initially taken to a camp of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) in Sitio Bakud, Barangay Kagay, Indanan, Sulu.

Tan said the MNLF handed over Manggak to the Joint Task Force Sulu around 11 a.m. Thursday.

Manggak was taken to the Camp General Teodulfo Bautista Station Hospital for proper medical examination and debriefing and eventual turnover to proper authorities at the Westmincom headquarters.

The Abu Sayyaf bandits seized Manggak, a skipper of a Malaysian-flagged fishing vessel, along with two of his crew on August 3 in the Malaysian side of the Kinabatangan border area in Sabah.

The bandits left behind two of Manggak’s crew, an Indonesian and a Malaysian, and took Manggak to the forest of Sulu.

Westmincom said the release was the result of the Joint Task Force Sulu troops' focused military operations to track down and destroy the Abu Sayyaf bandits responsible for the series of kidnappings and atrocities in the area.

Manggak’s release came four days after the Abu Sayyaf bandits have freed three Indonesian sailors.

Released on Sunday, September 18, were Lorence Koten, fishing boat captain, and crewmen Teo Doros Kofong and Emmanuel Arakain.
