THE City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) head Ma. Socorro Rojas has advised persons with disabilities (PWDs) to register in order for them to avail of the benefits stipulated under the law.
Rojas issued the advice after she received reports that not all PWDs in this city are registered with the CSWDO.
Rojas disclosed that records of her office showed there are 3,300 registered PWDs in this city although the number could be higher.
Republic Act 7277 otherwise known as the Magna Carta for Disabled Persons defines PWDs as “those suffering from restriction of different abilities, as a result of a mental, physical or sensory impairment, to perform an activity in the manner or within the range considered normal for a human being.”
Rojas said that the PWDs are entitled to enjoy 20 percent discount in purchasing medicines and medical as well as dental services to include in food and billeting establishments.
She said they are also entitled to enjoy five percent discount in the purchase of basic commodities as well as household products.
However, she said they must be registered with her office so that they can be issued identification card to avail all of the benefits specified under the law.
Aside from the benefits, Rojas said the PWDs may also avail of the government livelihood programs. (Bong Garcia/SunStar Philippines)
