FOUR New People's Army (NPA) rebels and a militiaman were killed, while seven others were wounded as troops repelled an attack in a patrol base in North Cotabato.
Major Ezra Balagtey, Eastern Mindanao Command (Eastmincom) information officer, said the attack happened at 12:15 a.m. Monday in the village of Luayon, Makilala town.
The attack triggered a more than four-hour firefight, as the troops stood firm to defend the patrol base.
Balagtey said the NPA rebels, numbering to around 20 gunmen, scampered to different directions, as the troops repelled them in the ensuing firefight that lasted until 5 a.m.
The troops recovered the remains of four slain NPA rebels who were abandoned by their comrades. The attackers were members of the Far Southern Mindanao Regional Party Committee.
Balagtey said a soldier and six militiamen were wounded while one was "killed in action."
He said security in patrol bases has been strengthened to prevent a similar attack. (SunStar Philippines)
