Cop wounded in Zambo Sur gun attack

A POLICEMAN has survived although wounded in a gun attack in the province of Zamboanga del Sur, the police said Wednesday.

Chief Inspector Helen Galvez, Police Regional Office-Zamboanga Peninsula information officer, identified the victim as Senior Police Officer 4 Carlos Omentic, 51, of the Pagadian City Police Station.

Galvez said the incident happened at 7:45 p.m. Tuesday, February 13, along Benigno Aquino Street in San Jose village, Pagadian City, the capital of Zamboanga del Sur province.

The police officer said investigation showed Omentic was driving motorcycle when he pulled over to answer a mobile phone call.

She said Omentic was shot by one of two men riding a motorcycle that suddenly stopped beside him while he was answering the phone call.

She said the suspects sped off as Omentic, although wounded, managed to pull his service firearms and return fire.

Recovered at the crime scene were four empty shells of caliber 45 pistol, six empty shell of 9-mm pistol, a deformed slug and live ammunition for caliber .45 pistol. (Bong Garcia/SunStar Philippines)
