Rice production increases in Zamboanga region

AN INCREASE in “palay” or rice wheat production in Zamboanga Peninsula was seen in 2009 with a 5.74 percent high compared to the 2008 record.
The Bureau of Agricultural Statistics (BAS) said that an increase of 8,522 metric tons (MT) or 3.12 percent in harvest was noted in the region in 2009.

The BAS said the province of Zamboanga del Norte has registered an output of 4,708 metric tons or 32.31 percent followed by Zamboanga Sibugay with a 5.38 percent increase in the palay production, while Zamboanga del Sur contributed 3.26 percent increase, the BAS said.
However, in Zamboanga City, palay production declined at 13.13 percent.
The BAS data also showed that amid the rise of rice harvest in the region, corn production output decreased by 2.51 percent or 4,563 MT in 2009 compared to the previous year. (Bong Garcia)
