THE Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) has signed an agreement with Araiba Sdn Bhd to lead the promotion of Circular Economy principles in the Philippines as part of the Asean Circular Economy Business Alliance (Aceba).
The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), signed on Friday, Feb. 28, 2025, by CCCI president Jay Yuvallos and Araiba chairman Thomas Thomas, cements CCCI’s role as the official country lead for the Philippines in Aceba. The collaboration aims to strengthen sustainable business practices, enhance resource efficiency and foster economic resilience across the region.
A circular economy is an economic system designed to eliminate waste and make the most of resources. Instead of the traditional “take, make, dispose” model, a circular economy focuses on reuse, repair, recycling and regeneration.
CCCI will spearhead advocacy efforts for circular economy principles among its business members, government agencies and stakeholders. As part of its responsibilities, the chamber will encourage national businesses to participate in Aceba and integrate sustainable practices into their operations.
CCCI said through this partnership, they are taking a proactive role in driving sustainability and innovation within the business community. It said that by embracing the circular economy, it aims to create a more resilient and competitive economic landscape for Cebu and beyond.
Araiba, a regional organization committed to responsible and sustainable enterprise, will provide technical expertise and best practices to support CCCI’s initiatives. The group will also facilitate regional engagement, promote knowledge-sharing and assist in the development of national strategies for circular economy adoption.
As part of the two-year agreement, both organizations will work closely to implement Aceba programs, organize events and establish frameworks that encourage responsible business practices. The initiative aligns with Asean’s broader sustainable development goals, aiming to create long-term economic and environmental benefits.
The MOU will remain in effect for an initial period of two years, with provisions for review and extension based on mutual agreement. / KOC
