SWU’s perfect run

THE Southwestern University Cobras completed a rare season sweep following a thrilling 70-67 win over the University of the Visayas for a 12-0 record in the elimination round of the 2016 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) College Basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum last night.

Meanwhile, the Cebu Institute of Technology-University Wildcats finally scored their first win after beating the defending champions University of San Carlos Warriors, 78-70.

It was a thrilling game, as expected, with SWU escaping with the win for UV’s failure to capitalize on its number of fouls.

Trailing 61-65 with 4:25 left in the game, UV regained the lead following a 6-0 run capped by a triple by Joshue Segumpan in the final 38.4 seconds of the game.

UV, however, failed to recognize it had two fouls to give as SWU scampered to buy a basket.

That blunder led to a triple for SWU by Ian Ortega in the final nine seconds.

After allowing Mark Tallo to score the first two points, UV scored the next 11 points and carried the momentum en route to posting the biggest lead of the game at 19 points, 34-15, with 5:54 to play in the second quarter.

However, it was all downhill for UV as SWU rallied to cut the lead down to 10, 42-32 at the half.

Shaquil Imperial then gave SWU the lead back with five straight points, 51-48, as UV was held to just two field goals in the third period.

Ortega scored the game high 20 points, and Tallo, who was clamped by the defense of the Lancers, managed 10 points. Rey Suerte topped UV with 16 points. Bassieru Sackor had another double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds, while Joshue Segumpan finished with 10.

The loss dragged UV to third place with a 7-4 record, while the University of San Jose-Recoletos Jaguars got second at 8-3 after a 69-60 win over the University of Southern Philippines Foundation.
