Road mishap claims 1, hurts 6

A VEHICULAR accident involving a passenger bus and a mini-dump truck in Barangay Magdugo, Toledo City left one man dead and six others wounded last Saturday afternoon.

According to PO3 Julius Sanchez, traffic investigator of the Toledo Police Station, the bus driven by Apolinario Bacarro hit a mini-dump truck with Raul Abella behind the wheel.

“There was an ongoing construction of the drainage beside the road so when the truck moved backward to unload the sand and gravel, instead of stopping, the bus ran through it,” Sanchez told Sun.Star Cebu.

The bus driver lost control of the vehicle and continue speeding into the opposite lane until it rammed into a nearby culvert.

Because of the impact, the front portion of the bus got ripped off, causing severe injuries to passenger Eduardo Liogan, 48. He died.

“He was on the passenger seat so he directly received the impact when the bus hit the pipe,” the traffic investigator said. “The bus driver should have stopped to let the dump truck through but instead he pushed on, which caused the accident.”

Liogan was from Pinamungahan town, Cebu.

Six persons who were hurt during the accident were identified as Jeanyvie Larano, 18, who hails from Pinamungahan; Jundel Oyao, 30, of Barangay Ibo, Toledo City; Cipriano Sarsa, 62, a resident of Barangay Malubog, Toledo; Michael Saedual, 26, from Barangay Casoy, Toldedo; and Rigie Cabante, 26, who is from Talavera of the same city.

Both drivers Bacarro and Abella surrendered to the police and are now detained while waiting for the charges to be filed against them.
