Pelayo: Brown rice, a grain of salt, distraction, tributaries and rumors

THE Department of Agriculture Region 3 has asked the assistance of its neighboring local government units and the media in promoting the brown or unpolished rice for consumption. DA has also launched its social media promo dubbed as the #Brown4good challenge. The idea is to gather 50,000 hashtags of #brown4good and #region3 on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram in order to donate and feed the less fortunate Filipinos within the region. This campaign is to put awareness about the health benefits of consuming brown rice, to assist the farmers in their livelihood, and also to help feed the poor people. All you got to do is to take a photo of a cooked brown rice, use the hashtags #brown4good and #region3, tag as many friends as possible, and share it publicly.

A grain of salt

Liberal Party's hope and Vice President Leni Robredo made a reaction to the recent Senate hearing on the alleged extrajudicial killings in the country. She said that the public should be very discerning in light of a testimony alleging that the President of the Philippines was responsible for the spate of killings in Davao when Duterte was still a city mayor. Robredo added that the allegations against the president are very serious and that the witness' testimony should be taken with a grain of salt. I don't believe that VP Leni has any plan of unseating Duterte to catapult her to the presidency. It is but unfair on her part. But I think it would be difficult for her to speak of the same when it comes to the minds of her co-members in the party.

No to distraction

The Laus Group has made a quality effort to remind the motorists about the Republic Act 10913 or the Anti-distracted Driving Law. The RA states that texting while driving is against the law. The LTO and PNP also supported the move by the Laus Group to bring awareness about the consequences of using mobile gadgets while driving. The authorities aim to save the lives of not just the person behind the wheel but also other innocent beings surrounding the vehicle. Although the law has been passed, the government admits that it still lacks resources to strictly implement it.

Tributaries

I congratulate the Angeles City Environment and Natural Resources Office or CENRO for its successful launch of "Angeles Malinis 365" with the Sapang Balen Clean-up Drive. It coincided with the 31st Coastal Clean-up Day. Councilor Edu Pamintuan got up early and geared up to participate on this activity. It seemed like he has a thing for tributaries. Since 2010, he has been seen actively participate in the Sagip Sapang Balen, a project initiated by Bishop Ambo David in 2009. His iconic photo during "Pala Mo, Buhay Ko" project along Abacan river during the wrath of Pinatubo was an indication that the kid with the glasses is keen on serving the public. Pamintuan, Jr. is now on his third term and he serves the people of Angeles with humility in spite of being the son of the world class city mayor who also happens to be the president of the League of Cities of the Philippines. A strong contender for higher position, he is now being attacked by a colleague this early, more than 2 years to go before local elections (if there will be any because of a possibility of an impending Federalism).

Rumors

Matinee idol John Lloyd Cruz has finally spoken up on rumors linking him to actress Maja Salvador. The story started when Salvador posted a photo with Cruz on social media. The gossip quickly spread like grass fire when the two went to Davao (not Boracay as some mistakenly thought). But John Lloyd dismissed the idea of a budding romance between the two and clarified that they are "just good friends." What's interesting is that he said the media should be more responsible with their jobs. In a report from PEP, Cruz explained in an interview: "Alam ninyo kung ano ang totoo at hindi. Hindi ako napipikon, naiintindihan ko ang media. Pero sana imbes na magbigay tayo ng liwanag, huwag na tayong dumagdag sa pagbibigay ng confusion sa mga tao." Oh my ka-look-a-like! Be careful in making such statement. Rumor has it that you will be lashed out for those remarks if you were still shooting that film with Jennylyn.
