Baguio lines up events for elderly month

ELDERLIES in the Summer Capital is set to take over the reins of the city officials for a day as part of the Elderly Month celebration set on October.

Selected Senior Citizens, in coordination with the Office of Senior Citizen Affairs and Office of the City Social Welfare and Development, sit as officials in city hall, different line agencies and their respective barangays on Octber 3.

City Social Welfare and Development Officer Betty Fang-asan said aside from the Senior Citizen Officials for a Day, different several events will also usher the senior’s month including the awarding of Outstanding Senior Citizens Achiever and the recognition of four centenarians.

Fang-asan added that the centenarians will receive P10,000 cash from the city government.

“We will be recommending the centenarians of the city awarded for the past years to Malacañang for the 100k incentive or the cash award through the Department of Social Welfare and Development, so in your respective communities, we encourage you to please document them properly for verification,” Fanagasan said.

A week-long photo exhibit will also be held at the city hall from 8AM to 5PM on Oct. 10 to 15 featuring the achievements of the outstanding senior citizens of the city through the years while in the afternoon of October 12, issues, concerns and matters for the elderly will be discussed in a forum dubbed “Pagkakaisa sa Pagbabago,” at the city multi-purpose hall.

A whole day medical and dental mission, with physicians and free medicine to be distributed will be done at the Baguio Convention Center on October 18.

On Oct. 26, senior citizens will showcase their talents, as well as theatrics at the Baguio Convention Center. According to Fangasan, the senior citizens’ Lakan and Lakambini will be crowned, with singing, ballroom, folkdance, ethnic presentations complete with colorful costumes.

The Ilocano poetic presentation, “Daniw” will be revived, Fangasan said, as a serenade to the selected royal couple.

Meanwhile, the Gintong Tala awards cap the celebration on the last Saturday of the month at the Blessed Association of Retirees (BARP) Foundation Auditorium along Buhagan road.

Awardees will came from the government service, education, medical, military, business and trade, tourism, socio-civic, journalism and sports. The awardees are screened and selected by media groups and line agency heads.

The theme for the celebration is, “Pagmamahal at Respeto ng Nakakabata, Nakapagpapaligaya sa Nakatatanda.” (With a report from Julie Fianza)
