3 share chess honors in Davao

DAVAO City's Reynaldo Quiñonez, Gino Angelo Asuncion, and Wesley Jovan Magbanua clinched titles in their respective categories at the close of the second APM Open and Youth Rapid Chess Tournament held at the Market Basket, Damosa Lanang in Davao City over the weekend.

Quiñonez edged fellow 4.5 scorer Digos City Open chess champion Harrison Maamo of Davao City via superior tiebreaks for the open crown as National Para Games champion Henry Lopez of Panabo City placed third with four points in the five-round Swiss System format competition.

Quiñonez pocketed P2,000 cash while Maamo and Lopez got P1,000 and P500, respectively.

Asuncion, a student of San Pedro College, topped the under-20 event as he earned 4.5 over Kurt John Placencia of Davao City National High School (DCNHS) and Janes Hitfield Caingles, a fourth year Psychology student of Holy Cross of Davao College.

Placencia and Caingles both made identical four points but the former posted better tiebreaks to snatch the runner-up finish. The top three players received P1,000, P700 and P500.

Magbanua of Los Amigos Elementary School, meanwhile, outclassed Christian Anjo Dumogho of Davao Central College and Marc Lawrence Unday of DCNHS for the under-12 title.

They took home P700, P500 and P300.

Special awardees were Mary Israel Palero (best female open), Blanche Ellyz Bongato, (best female under-20) and Charlene Moulic (best female under-12).

The third APM Rapid Chess Tournament will resume on October 2 at the same venue. (ABM)
