PWDs to join Argao dragon boat race

A TEAM of person-with-disabilities (PWD) from the Philippine Acceptable Disability Services Inc. (Pads) will be in the field for the 2nd Dragons sa Argao Dragon Boat Competition at the Argao Royal Palms in Poblacion in southern Cebu tomorrow.

Pads is helping out the PWDs engage into sport thru the adopted sports program. There are 20 PWDs who will be competing this Saturday, and they will be divided into two teams for the small boat category.

Pads chief executive officer John Paul “JP” Ecarma Maunes said that Pads started with the adopted sports program a few months ago. Aside from dragon boat, Pads is also promoting seated volleyball and wheelchair basketball.

A seated volleyball clinic will be held on Oct. 6 to 7 which will be spearheaded by US sports envoy coach Eric Hodgson thru the help of US embassy sport diplomacy program. The clinic will be at the Mandaue Sports Complex in Oct. 6 and at the Pajo covered court in Oct. 7.

“The adopted sports program is grassroots talent identification, all these sports are part of the Paralympics. We are going to help them train and those who have potential will have the chance to compete the national or international events and we can endorse them to the National Paralympics Committee,” said Maunes.

Maunes said that the dragon boat team competing tomorrow has a mix of disabilities--deaf, amputees, blinds and wheelchair users.

“The organizers told us that there’s a separate category for the PWDs. We’re going to join the event so they can compete with each other,” he added. “And we also want to create awareness that the PWD can do sports and the dragon boat is available for them.”

The Pads dragon boat team was formed five weeks ago and they were trained by the Gruppo Habagat-Paramount Team. They practice every weekend at the Cebu Yacht Club in Lapu-Lapu City.
