Mendoza: SMB should oust Ginebra to rid puzzle

HOW come Ginebra San Miguel got massacred by San Miguel Beer on Sunday? Did that 101-72 ghastly rout to force a winner-take-all Game 5 on Tuesday simply mean the Beermen more superior than the Gin Kings?

Very clearly, the 33 combined boards of SMB’s June Mar Fajardo (16) and Elijah Milsap (17) stood out, but the real killer blows in Game 4 were the ton of threes Marcio Lassiter had rained on Ginebra.

Lassiter alone hit 7-of-9 from the field, including five straight triples in a blazing 11 straight second quarter blast en route to a team-high 25 points.

He was backed by a suffocating defense that limited GSM to a mere seven second-quarter points against SMB’s 25 for an imposing 55-29 halftime bulge. It was cruise control from there.

Thus, if SMB could not finish GSM off on Tuesday, that’d rank as the puzzle of the year.

THE golf season is on in the amateur backyard as the PAL Ladies Interclub begins on Tuesday in Baguio City’s Camp John Hay, with Manila Southwoods defending its crown against a slew of determined challengers led by Cebu Country Club, Bukidnon’s Del Monte and Davao’s Apo that has the fearsome Imee Garcia as one of the team’s mainstays. Good luck!

I was told preparations for the Fil-Am International are also in full steam now, with top officials led by Anthony de Leon and Tim Allen from perennial hosts John Hay (par 69) and Baguio Country Club (par 61) wracking their brains anew to ensure success for the world’s biggest amateur golfest, participants-wise.

Now on its 67th year, the Fil –Am, set from Nov. 23 to Dec. 10, will again have San Miguel Corporation as title sponsor through SMC President Ramon S. Ang, the legendary philanthropist also known as a famous sports patron for the longest time.

And, for the first time, perennial backer Toyota Motor Philippines will stake two cars, one in the Seniors and another in the Men’s Regular, through TMP president Satoru Suzuki.

Do I see BCC Chair Rico Agcaoili smiling from ear to ear? Cheers!

Congratulations also to Fr. Steven Tynan and his group staging the St. Benedict Charity Golf Cup on Friday (Oct. 7) at Capitol Hills Q.C. for the benefit of the parish’s high school and college scholars from depressed areas of Brgy. Holy Spirit Q.C. Nothing beats an event held for a cause. Amen.
