Endangered turtle rescued in Zamboanga

PERSONNEL of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) have rescued an Olive Ridley turtle Monday, October 3, in the vicinity of Tumalutab village, Zamboanga City.

Benjan Ilahan, BFAR regional office’s Fishery Management Regulatory Enforcement Division chief, said a BFAR personnel aboard a patrol boat when they chanced upon the turtle with a chest injury.

Ilahan said the male turtle measures 56 centimeters (cm) in length 58 cm in width and weighs 15 kilograms.

The rescued turtle was placed under the care of the Office of the City Veterinarian.

The Olive Ridley turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea) is one of the endangered species.

It is a medium-sized turtle found in warm and tropical waters and also known as the Pacific Ridley sea turtle. (Sunnex)
