Danao bids for Palaro

WITH Bacolod City dropping out of the bidding wars for the hosting of the Palarong Pambansa, it left Leyte and Ilo-ilo from the Visayas hoping to stage the annual multi-sporting conclave for the elementary and secondary student-athletes.

Danao City has sent in their letter of intent to host the event but Cebu City remains firm that it is not bidding for next year's Palaro hosting.

The host for the 2017 summer event is expected to be announced this month and sources say that Danao is already refurbishing its track oval hoping to win the hosting bid.

Danao City Councilor Jed Almendras, the Chairman on the Committee in Youth and Sports said that it is the initiative of Danao City Mayor Ramon "Nito" Durano III to express the city's intent to host the meet for next summer.

"We are not sure yet if it will be awarded to Danao but Mayor Nito has already sent out the letter of intent," said Almendras.

In the past Danao has hosted regional meets and a bevy of other international sporting competitions like Asian Mountainbike events and even the Southeast Asian Games.

As for Cebu, hosting the event is still out of the question as they would rather focus on the athletes' performance as of now.

"Right now, Cebu City councilor Joy Young wants to focus on training the athletes. Mas importante na atong tagaan ug sakto nga training ang athletes. We'd rather have athletes in good shape than host the event and fair badly in the games," said Ricky Ballesteros of the Cebu City Sports Council.

Most athletes that comprise Region 7 come from Cebu City. In 2015, the Region dropped from a perennial 4th placer in the overall ranking to sixth--the worst in years.

Meanwhile, organizers of the Cebu City Olympics set the date for the games on Nov. 10-13. Ballesteros said that while the main hub will be at the Cebu City Sports Center, several events will be held at the SM City Seaside.

Ordinarily, the winners of the Cebu City Olympics will represent the city in the regional tournament, the Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association and where winners will go on to the Palarong Pambansa.

However, the athletes just might be a little busy than usual as the Cebu CIty Olympics winners just might represent the City in another sporting meet, the Batang Pinoy.

Batang Pinoy, an event hosted by the Philippine Sports Commission, scrapped the regional qualifying, and left it to the LGUs to decide on their selection process.

"We are actually looking at three events as basis for the selection: the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc, (Cesafi), the Milo Little Olympics and the City meet. It will be subject to screening before deciding on the final list of athletes for the Batang Pinoy,” said Ballesteros.
