Eugene Torre to play chess exhibitions in Davao

WATCH the country's pride Asia's first grand master (GM) Eugene Torre, who recently clinched the men's open board 3 bronze medal in the 42nd Chess Olympiad Baku 2016 in Azerbaijan, play simultaneous chess exhibitions in Davao City on October 22 and 23.

One of the sponsors, lawyer Jong Guevarra, Jr., bared this on his Facebook post on Sunday.

Guevarra said the "living legend" will be in Davao City on October 21 to 24 but only set two days for the simultaneous games.

GM Torre's Davao visit is fresh from his "super human performance" in Baku where he scored 10 points in 11 rounds meriting him a bronze finish.

The Filipino was unbeaten in nine matches, only forcing draws with GMs Bernal Gonzalez (Costa Rica) and Aryan Tari (Norway) in boards 4 and 6, respectively.

Guevarra said Torre will have a 10-board simul exhibition against Davao City's top youth players on October 22 at Damosa, Lanang and another 10-board simul exhibition against Davao executives on October 23 at Jardin del Roca Resort in Eden, Toril.

Registration is P1,000 per player on a first-come, first-served basis complete with certification and other memorabilia.

Proceeds of the simul games will be given to GM Torre to support his campaign in the World Seniors Chess Championships slated November 18 to December 1 in Czech Republic.

Torre's visit is backed up by Guevarra Jr., Glen Paclar, national master (NM) Jonathan Tan, Engineer Allan Diez, and Cris Yap, among others.

National Chess Federation of the Philippines regional director James Infiesto, who was Torre's team captain in the Olympiad, also told media at the sidelines of the Davao Sportswriters Association Forum Thursday at the NCCC Mall B3 Center lanes family room that they are holding the event to show their support to Torre's bid in the world competition.

Infiesto said Torre gave honor to the country with his recent feat.

"This will be a great opportunity for Dabawenyos, even young players, to play with GM Torre," Infiesto said.

Ateneo de Davao University athletics director Noli Ayo, who was a guest during the DSA Forum, committed to send Ateneo's three chess coaches to the simultaneous event.
