Garbage collection schedule 'not practical'

IN a related development, some barangays in Cebu City are still not following the City’s Department of Public Services’ (DPS) new schedule of garbage collection.

Luz Barangay Captain Jerome Pagador said they need to collect garbage starting at 4 a.m. because the 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. schedule is not practical in their barangay.

He said that at 5 p.m., traffic going to and from Banilad-Talamban (Bantal) area starts to build up, particularly on Archbishop Reyes Ave., and the presence of garbage trucks on the road will congest the area further.

He said Barangay Luz has no alternative route for the garbage trucks. He said he has to adjust the collection schedule since his barangay has the busiest roads in the city.

“We tried it during the first day, but our garbage trucks only further caused traffic,” Pagador said.

Although they collect the garbage in the morning, Pagador said they follow the schedule for throwing waste at the Inayawan Sanitary Landfill.

Pasil

For Pasil Barangay Captain Julius Guioguio, garbage collection in some areas of his village is also better done in the morning.

Guioguio said they don’t have any concerns with the schedule but they prefer to collect the garbage in the interior areas in the morning so they won’t disrupt the traffic there.

“There are no vehicles there because it’ an interior area but in all other areas along the main roads, we follow the schedule,” he said.

Similar to Luz, Pasil also throw their garbage to the landfill from 5 p.m. to 7 a.m. the next day.

Last Monday, DPS operations head John Paul Gelasque said Luz and Pasil, along with Sawang Calero and Suba, were among those who have yet to strictly implement the new garbage collection scheme.
