'Lawin' kills at least 7

SUPER Typhoon Lawin (Haima), the strongest storm to hit the country this year, killed at least seven people and destroyed infrastructures in several Luzon provinces, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said Friday.

In an update, the NDRRMC identified the fatalities as Edgar Genese, Jonie Borja, Jhon Carlos Hatap, Joshua Hella, Jessie Hella, Jay-ar Chawagan and Jeramel Alfaro. All victims were killed by landslides in the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR).

Genese, Borja and Hatap were killed in La Trinidad, Benguet, while the Hellas, as well as Chawagan and Alfaro died in the landslides that occurred in Sablang, Kibungan, Benguet.

Several areas in the CAR were placed under Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal number 5 hours before Lawin made landfall last Wednesday night.

In a consolidated report submitted by the NDRRMC, it said that 113 houses were damaged by Lawin, six were totally wrecked.

It said 18,157 families or 90,589 individuals were evacuated in Ilocos, Cordillera, Central Luzon, Cagayan, Calabarzon, and Bicol regions due to the super typhoon.

The NDRRMC said 65 barangays in Pangasinan and Pampanga were inundated due to heavy rains brought by Lawin.

It added that 42 road sections and four bridges in Ilocos, Cagayan, Central Luzon, and Cordillera regions were impassable due to flood and other debris blockage.

Disaster official led by NDRRMC executive director Ricardo Jalad conducted an aerial inspection in areas hit by the storm on Friday. (Sunnex)
