Lawin claims 6 in Benguet

IN THE wrath of Typhoon Lawin, six perished during its onslaught.

Casualties include John Carlos, a 20–day-old baby buried in a landslide in Kibungan town during the onslaught of the typhoon early morning of Thursday.

Mayor Cesar Molitas told Sun*Star Baguio the parents of John Carlos were forewarned to evacuate but ignored the pleas to transfer designated centers.

Molitas said casualties were reported in the town including Chayote farmer Joshua and Jessie Hella who died in a mudslide at Sitio Sablang in barangay Sagpat. The Hella brothers hail from Buloy Bindoy, Negros Oriental and worked as caretakers in the local farm.

Molitas added the brothers were inside their kitchen when the landslide covered them in mud alerting the Barangay Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (BDRRMC) to conduct search and retrieval operations.
In La Trinidad, casualties were identified as construction workers Edgar Genese, of San Fabian, Pangasinan and Jonie Borja, of Damortis , La Union who were both in a building in Pugius – Longlong when a landslide occurred.

Construction foreman, Ronnie Lagmay Peria said they were all asleep in their bunks on site during the height of the typhoon but later decided to transfer to the basement of the building when rain and wind became fierce, however, Lagman said both victims refused to transfer with the group and insisted to stay put.

La Trinidad Police personnel conducted the search and rescue operation for both Borja and Genese who were found still wrapped in their blankets, they were later brought to the Benguet General Hospital morgue.

Acting Mayor Joey Marrero said there has been no ground movement reported in sitio little Kibungan over the course of the storm and declared a suspension of classes for Friday, October 21.

In Buguias, rescuers retrieved the body of 65–year–old farmer Arsenio Sad–ang Lanta-en after his home was covered in a landslide at Nakiangan, Abatan.
