A MAN was shot dead on Kawit St., Barangay Ermita, Cebu City at 12:10 a.m. yesterday.
The victim, who remained unidentified, was described to be about 40-50 years old, 5’5”, and medium build.
He was wearing a blue shirt, with SLMTOD (Sta. Lucia Marietta Tricycle Operators and Drivers Association) printed on it.
The man was reportedly walking in the area when the gunman, whose identity was also not yet determined, approached and shot him.
A security guard from a nearby lumber store also told the police that he heard two gunshots, which prompted him to check where it came from.
He said he saw the man lying on the street, lifeless.
Police recovered two empty shells from .45 caliber gun.
In Cebu City alone, there are 60 recorded cases that were categorized as “deaths under investigation” for the last three months since President Rodrigo Duterte assumed office last July 1.
Based on police records from July 1 to Sept. 21, the month of August yielded the most number of killings, peaking at 23 deaths and most of them were drug-related.
The most common guns used in the killings were .45 pistol, .38 revolver and 9mm pistol.
In Barangay Balabagon, Moalboal, Cebu, a 44-year-old woman was shot to death by her neighbor last Saturday afternoon.
Police identified the casualty as Susana Tabanao Mortal, who succumbed to several gunshot wounds in the body.
The suspect, Emirito Makiling Cardente, 53, fled.
In an investigation conducted by the team led by PO3 Benedicto Rubia, Mortal was inside her house at 2:30 p.m. when Cardente barged inside, pulled a gun and shot the victim.
The attack was witnessed by Mortal’s seven-year-old daughter.
Mortal’s neighbors and relatives rushed her to the Badian District Hospital, but the attending doctor declared her dead on arrival.
Rubia’s team recovered four empty shells of .45 pistol.
Police are tracking down the gunman. They are also still investigating the motive of the murder.
A murder complaint will be filed against Cardente before the Provincial Prosecutor’s Office.
In Barangay Alegria, Cordova, Barkley “Aking” Dico, 22, was also gunned down by four men riding on two motorcycles.
The victim was having fun with his friends near the chapel outside the gym where a disco was held last Friday night when the attack happened.
The suspects, who wore masks, arrived and they shot the victim several times. Dico was rushed by his friends to the Lapu-Lapu City District Hospital, but he did not make it alive.
