Survey says peace, security are top Dabawenyos' concerns

A RECENT survey of the University of Mindanao-Institute of Popular Opinion (UM-IPO) revealed that Dabawenyos want the Davao City Government to improve peace and security programs.

UM-IPO, in its August 2 to 12 survey on Dabawenyos, preferred priority projects and said the public has top concerns on robbery and gangsterism.

Adrian Tamayo, UM-IPO director for quantitative studies, told reporters Monday during the Kapehan Sa Dabaw at The Annex of SM City Davao they will soon submit the survey results to the City Mayor's Office.

"Maybe we can submit it to the City Mayor and hope that this can be of help in coming up with future government projects and programs," Tamayo said.

Tamayo said the survey has implemented a multi-stage cluster sampling in various levels (districts, sub-district and barangay unit) with a total of 1,200 respondents.

It has five percent margin of error and 95 percent confidence level.

Other projects and programs which topped the survey and Dabawenyos want to be prioritized are availability of free medicines at the barangay health stations, environmental protection (watershed) and solution to vigilante killings.

Concerns on sustaining anti-smoking, free farm inputs (fertilizer and pesticides), small and medium enterprise development, maintenance of city recreation grounds, skills development for employment and skills, flood-solution projects, imposition of land use plan, cementing roads in far barangays to connect to city center and solution to illegal drugs, among others.

The problem on the increasing traffic congestion in the city, however, was not mentioned.

Tamayo noted that this year's preferred priority projects are lesser by four items, comparing the results of this year's survey against 2013.

"The items that were not found in this year's priority list are projects for women and elderly, recreational projects and festivals, business tax exemptions and disaster preparedness," Tamayo said.

"The City Government may shift infrastructure development on road connectivity and flood-solution projects," the survey concluded.

Tamayo added that their surveys on Dabawenyos' optimism and opinion on the US-China-Philippines relations will be out soon.
