Motorcycle-riding gunmen kill policewoman

A POLICEWOMAN was killed in a gun attack by motorcycle-riding gunmen in an east coast village of Zamboanga City, the police said Tuesday, October 25.

The Zamboanga City Police Office (ZCPO) identified the slain policewoman as Police Officer 1 Peggy Lynne Vargas, 40, who is assigned at Police Station 1.

The ZCPO reported the incident occurred around 5:57 p.m. Monday, October 24, along national highway at Sitio Mialim in the village of Vitali, Zamboanga City.

Investigation showed Vargas standing in front of an eatery and having a conversation with her friends, Ma. Socorro Zamonte and Alona Zamonte, when two men on board a motorcycle arrived and opened fire.

The suspects sped off towards the village of Tictapul after the incident.

Vargas, who sustained multiple gunshot wounds, was rushed to the Vitali Lying-in Clinic but was declared dead on arrival by the attending physician.

Vargas, a native of Marilao, Bulacan, is one of the policemen from the National Capital Region that were assigned to the Police Regional Office-Zamboanga Peninsula.

Investigation continues in a bid to establish the motive of the incident and unmask the suspects, the ZCPO said.
