Robredo visits Camiguin’s Lanzones festival

MAMBAJAO, CAMIGUIN – Vice president Maria Leonor “Leni” Robredo made a brief stop in Camiguin on Friday, October 28. This was part of her official trip in other parts of the country to see for herself what the island has to offer on its week-long Lanzones festival.

Robredo was enthralled by the sights and sounds Camiguin has to offer that she vowed to go back with her family for a vacation.

Now on its 37th year, the festival opened on October 23 with a theme, “Kinaiyahan atong ampingan, kalamboan alang sa tanan (Nature we must care for, prosperity for all).”

Local and foreign visitors came to this island province to celebrate its progress through the years as well as the abundant harvest of the truly sweet and quality lanzones which the island is known for. October is the harvest season for this tropical fruit.

Street dancing was one of the highlights of the festival. Students from various schools participated in this event and showcased their dancing skills in colorful robes.

The Lanzones Festival, held every third of October, is one of the major festivities in the province.

Other events include the “Panaad,” a yearly observance of Catholic devotees who walk around the island’s 68-kilometer circumferential road during Lenten season.

The “San Juan sa Hibok-hibok Festival”, on the other hand, is a celebration in honor of St. John the Baptist held every 24th of June. It is the time of the year where people go wet and wild with a variety of water and ball games and fluvial parade.
