Davao City's Batang Pinoy chess team complete

STANDOUTS Earl Rhay Mantilla and Irish Yngayo will lead the Davao City chess team to the upcoming Batang Pinoy 2016 National Championships after topping their respective events in the eliminations held at the Microtel by Wyndham in Damosa, Lanang Sunday, October 30.

Honey Grace Buenafe, Wesley Jovan Magbanua, Rodel Buenafe Jr., Samantha Umayan, Faith Lienane Salajudin, Francix Xavier Guimalan, and Jackie Lou Andoy are also part of the team that will see action in the upcoming nationals set in Tagum City, Davao del Norte on November 27 to December 2.

Mantilla scored a total of 4.5 points in the five-rounds Swiss-System format to rule the boys under-17 rapid event over Kurt John Placencia (4.0) and Jude Nathaniel Enoc (3.5), who placed second and third, respectively.

Mantilla also earned six points in the seven-round boys under-17 standard event, prevailing over Bhing Joel Gimony (5.0) and Aldrian Moulic (5.0) who grabbed the next two places.

Guimalan, however, earned 4.5 points to govern the boys under-17 standard class over next two placers Gino Angelo Asuncion (4.0) and Mantilla (4.0).

Buenafe, for her part, tallied five points for the girls under-17 standard title over Loraine Yngayo (4.0) and Roselle Vienne Guevara (3.0).

Buenafe annexed her second title with five points in the rapid event.

Blanche Ellyz Bongato (3.5) was second while Irish Yngayo (3.0) finished third.

Yngayo, however, bounced back in the blitz event having edged fellow 5.5 scorer Buenafe who took the runner-up honors. Five-pointer Lorraine Yngayo placed third.

In boys under-12 standard event, Magbanua garnered five points to win over Marc Unday (4.0) and David Patrick Belisario (4.0).

Magbanua also topped the boys under-12 blitz with six points as Belisario (5.5) placed second and James Rhie Leigh Sullano (5.5) third.

Meanwhile, Rodel Buenafe Jr. (4.5) bested four-pointers David Belisario and Gabriel John Umayan as Samantha Umayan (4.5) copped the girls under-12 standard crown at the expense of 3.5 scorers Jasmine Rei Amoncio and Lienane Faith Salajudin.

Jackie Lou Andoy, however, won the girls rapid under-12 title while the girls 12-undr blitz crown went to Salajudin. (ABM)
