Malcom square rehab delayed

A TWO-week delay has befallen contractors of Peoples' Park, which is now set to open on the second week of December.

Architect Aris Go said materials needed for the completion of the park will be underway this week for the pavement of the historic park as well as provisions for a public toilet.

The rehabilitation of the Malcom Square has foregone with enclosed spaces which the old design had both for security and freedom of space

Go said the stage of the park before had “tenants” and posed as a security risk for passersby’s.

The project has been bided out to RAJ Construction which costs P10 million but was stalled by rains the past month.

Go said the bust of George A. Malcolm has also been repositioned for better view and maximum exposure which will be closer to the people.

The park will have seating for those who want to lounge around the park with the usual fixtures like the shoe shine boys to be accommodated as well.

The park will also be lined with R11 tiles which are designed to be non slip for safe walking using subdued muted colors of beige, white and black.

Design of the park is described to be wedge shape and gradual slope of the site is taken advantage of by introducing a stepped surface that may function as platforms for viewing during speaker-led events and a stage for others.

The space would also allow for mobile stages and setups to be fabricated anywhere within the square allowing it to be used for different purposes such as theatrical performances, concerts, fairs, Sunday markets and art exhibitions with the main square is distinctively defined by a randomly striped dark grey and white monolithic tiles, striped grass and pavers, new timber clad benches and a pedestrian street at one of the edges.
