Athletic Association volleyball action heats up

UNIT 1 posted its debut win over Unit-7, 25-10, 25-8, at the start of the Davao City Athletic Association (DCAA) Meet elementary girls volleyball tournament held at the Davao City National High School (DCNHS) gym Wednesday, November 9.

Unit 1 spikers capitalized on their service aces to snatch the win.

Unit 1, which is composed of Meryl Potate, Hilary Clarion, Ishel Nablea, Jerimae Ceballos, Aimie Albacite, Khay Aleck Pablo, Andrea Ellivera, Kathleen Jhean Pacaldo, Paula Jeha, Sophia Pabilona, Immanuel Tan, and Cherlyn Mahinay will face a still undetermined opponent in the next round.

In other matches, Unit 4 spanked Unit 8, 25-10, 25-12, while Unit 6 outlasted Unit 2 25-20, 21-25, 25-11 and Unit 3 subdued Unit 5, 25-16, 25-12.

In High School girls, Unit 6 bested Unit 8 25-16, 25-18, while Unit 1 demolished Unit 7, 25-17, 25-4.

Unit 3 turned back Unit 4, 27-15, 25-17 while Unit 5 pulled off a 25-14, 25-21 win over Unit 2.

Davao City Schools Division Superintendent Maria Ines Asuncion, Ceso 6, and Sports Development Division-City Mayor's Office (SDD-CMO) office-in-charge Mikey Aportadera graced the DCAA Meet opening ceremony late Tuesday, November 8.

Asuncion and Aportadera spearheaded the hoisting of banners along with Unit heads Filipinas Samblingo and Wenefredo Cagape of Unit 1, Arlenor Abelardo and Nelma Barnija of Unit 2, Adeline Go and Fortunato Sagayno of Unit 3, Pelagio Wapaño and Leo Asilo of Unit 4, Ma. Lita Montalban (Unit 5), Ma. Corazon Sunga (Unit 6), Nestor Sorrosa (Unit 7) and Doctor Judith Bacarro (Unit 8) right after the torch was lit.

Aportadera, in his message, said the city may not have world-class facilities but it produces the most medals.

“How much more if naa na ta'y ing-ana (How much more if we will have one),” Aportadera said.

Palarong Pambansa 2016 tennis silver medalist Danna Mariella Abad led the oath of sportsmanship followed by the oath of the technical officials led by Public Schools District Supervisor-Sports Lydia Villegas Ampo.

Asuncion, meanwhile, urged city athletes to play with excellence, and for coaches to take care of the athletes and for the team manager to have fair judgement just before she declared the DCAA 2016 open.
