Unit 1 dominates DCAA Meet 2016

UNIT 1 emerged overall champion by harvesting a total of 98 gold medals, 35 silvers and 51 bronzes at the close of the Davao City Athletic Association (DCAA) Meet 2016 recently.

Unit 6 was runner-up with 68 golds, 45 silvers and 53 bronzes followed by Unit 4 that accounted for 47 golds, 55 silvers and 37 bronzes for the third spot.

Trailing behind were Unit 2 with a 38-65-76 gold-silver-bronze medal count, 32-47-59 Unit 3, 21-26-30 Unit 5, 14-18-31 Unit 8 and 9-13-9 Unit 7.

Swimming lifted Unit 6 to clinch the secondary division title, collecting 14 of its 45-gold output on top of 26 silvers and 30 bronzes.

Unit 1 came in close second with 40 golds, 18 silvers and 27 bronzes while 31-37-43 Unit 2 was third.

The overall champion, however, dominated the elementary division, stamping opposition with 58 golds, 17 silvers and 24 bronzes while arch-rival Unit 6, which hauled 23 golds, 19 silvers and 23 bronzes, settled for the runner-up honors.

Unit 4 (20-30-15) grabbed the third spot.

Unit 6 elementary swimmers also collected 14 golds but not enough to contest Unit 1, which according to Department of Education Public Schools District Supervisor Lydia Ampo garnered 23 medals in gymnastics, 11 golds in elementary taekwondo, 14 golds in elementary arnis and six golds in elementary athletics.

Ampo said Davao City Schools Division Superintendent Maria Ines Asuncion, Ceso 6 and the City Government of Davao were very supportive of the DCAA Meet that awarded medals to winners this year.

Unit 4 ruled the elementary boys and girls table tennis, sweeping four golds.

Ryan Calderon of Unit 4 defeated June Marie Navarro of Unit 3 and Bernard Romero of Unit 1 for the boys singles title.

Unit 4 pair of Clark Contridas and Junmark Teruya outclassed Kal El Yap and Gavin Lim of Unit 6 for the doubles crown.

In the distaff side, Marivel Ladero bested teammate Michelle Contridas in an all-Unit 4 finale while Ayesha Bonniemhe Quibol and Regine Portugaliza of Unit 2 topped the doubles event.

Unit 6, for its part, cornered two golds in secondary table tennis as be-medalled Corrine Cartera governed the girls singles event at the expense of Lovely Mae Burlado of Unit 4, while Gene Angkang won the boys singles final over Unit 5 entry Ken Luzon.

Unit 4, however, salvaged the gold in secondary girls doubles through Jess Cris Logronio and Inie Dianne Sombilon as Unit 4 shared the limelight via one golden finish in secondary boys doubles behind the combined forces of Alvin Bibaoco and Herzel Abendan.

In secondary boys tennis, Stephen Tubbs of Unit 8 emerged champion in boys singles over John Roddick Litan of Unit 1. But the latter bounced back by claiming the boys doubles gold and the girls doubles gold.

Unit 6 entry Nicole Ann Bautista copped the secondary girls singles gold over Rachel Patricia Velez of Unit 8.
