Legaspi: Non-traditional traditions

MAY 2016, the world was amazed at the triumph of Mayor Rodrigo Duterte as the top leader of “the best country in Asia. “ The President is not a traditional politician in national politics. He is known for his transformation of the City of Davao and is known to be down-to-earth, and a person who really serves and do “hands-on” management.

November 2016, the world is once again placed in awe as businessman Donald Trump defeats veteran politician Hillary Clinton. Trump was not into politics in the past, but was prompted to seek the highest post in the land to oppose the Obama policies, especially on business. His battle cry, “Make America Great Again” was similar to Digong’s “I love the Philippines, this is our county.” It got Trump the support of the electoral college.

These two leaders, Trump and Duterte, are counted among those considered in history as the non-traditional leaders who have thrown their hats into traditional politics. Usually, it is this kind of leaders that would effect great changes. They often defeat seasoned politicians for what they say really comes from their inner selves and not just to please certain groups or denominations.

However, due to their non-traditional ways, they are often misunderstood and subjected to political processes that might destroy their social dynamism. The leadership styles of these leaders will be new and will be “outside of the book.” The styles are non-traditional but are effective compared to the systematized ones.

Trump’s and Duterte’s leadership will have no failures. They will be successful and will give a push. The politicians who are inside the boxes will be the ones who will be giving them failing grades based on boxed standards but as for these leaders, they could be successful and bring development and transformation.

The problem will be with traditional politicians. In the Philippines, they are preying on the people of the President. It was a great welcome to the opposition when Ramos resigned from the administration. They see it as a crippling act for the President. This is the political “Trojan Horse” for the Duterte administration. However, these people should remind themselves that we have a leader who does not follow a management principle from the west. He has his own principles and knows them well. It is the traditional politicians who keep on following foreign-based politics. In the end, Trump and Duterte are two leaders who are not afraid of losing their presidency. They are not intoxicated with power.

Trump’s pronouncement of “sending out” illegal aliens from the US and the creation of jobs for Americans sent-off great waves all over the world. BPO firms in Asia were alarmed of their future. “TNT” Filipinos in the US are scrambling like mice and rats. Illegal aliens are now looking for an escape route from the US federal officers. It was like when Duterte announced his separation from the US economic policy and opens its doors to Russia and China. The reaction to the statement went as far as the ends of Africa. These are proclamations that sowed fear and threat among traditional friends. Duterte and Trump know whom to be friends with.
