2 soldiers died, 2 others wounded in ambush

TWO soldiers were killed while two others were wounded in an ambush by gunmen believed to be New People’s Army (NPA) rebels in the province of Zamboanga del Sur, the military said Monday, November 21.

Western Mindanao Command (Westmincom) spokesman Filemon Tan Jr. said the attack took place around 8:28 a.m., Monday at Purok 4 in the village Guinicolalay, Dinas, Zamboanga del Sur.

Tan said the soldiers were aboard a truck on the way to conduct Bayanihan activities when gunmen ambushed them.

He did not categorically say whether or not the suspects are NPA rebels although the municipality of Dinas is a known NPA-infested area.

Tan did not release the names of the casualties pending notification of their immediate families except in saying they belong to the Army’s 53rd Infantry Battalion based in Guipos, Zamboanga del Sur.

He said reinforcement was sent to assist the ambushed troops and to retrieve the casualties.
