CEBU (Updated) -- THE father of the getaway driver of suspected gun-for-hire and Barangay Maghaway Councilor Felix Abacajan was shot dead in Barangay Lawaan 1, Talisay City yesterday morning.
Manuel Canangcaan, 61, was on his way home around 9 a.m. after dropping off his grandson at school when the incident happened.
The victim was maneuvering a steep road, when two unidentified men sidled up to his vehicle and shot him once in the back of the head.
The culprits then fled toward Barangay Maghaway, in the outskirts of the city.
With Canangcaan losing consciousness, his vehicle backed up 20 meters and hit a store.
The victim was rushed to the Talisay District Hospital but he was declared dead on arrival.
Canangcaan is the father of Adhmann Canangcaan, Abacajan’s alleged getaway driver.
PO1 Romanito Romano of the Talisay City Police Station told reporters that a month before the incident, the elder Canangcaan came to their office to report that he was being followed by unidentified men.
Police are still trying to determine the motive behind his murder.
Canangcaan’s son surrendered to local police after he was tagged as Abacajan’s getaway driver. The whereabouts of Adhmann, who is currently out on bail, are unknown.
Abacajan, who is Adhmann’s cousin, was involved in a shootout with operatives of the Regional Special Operations Group, who were serving a search warrant against the former.
Even though Abacajan and Adhmann were able to flee, Abacajan’s brother Joeser and Julian Bonghanoy Jr, a suspected gun-for-hire, were killed during the operation.
Abacajan and his cohorts were reportedly connected to suspected drug lord Franz Sabalones.
