Inside private mine tunnel: Gas poisoning kills 3

THREE small scale miners died after being trapped inside a private mine tunnel in Barangay Ucab, in Itogon, Benguet.

The victims were identified as Rosalino Api-it Narciza, 54, married, Barry Rimando Api-it, 36, and Santiago Falikao Banganan, 32, all resident of Ucab engaged in small scale mining.

Initial investigation disclosed Narciza entered an abandoned private mine tunnel in the morning of November 22 to retrieve his equipment but failed to get out.

This prompted Api-it to follow his uncle inside the tunnel for possible rescue but after quite some time, the two failed to emerge.

Banganan, which was alerted by a concerned citizen, turned on the blower to remove poisonous gas before entering the tunnel in a bid to rescue the two miners but his efforts also failed.

Alarmed by the citizens, rescuers used larger blowers before entering the tunnel and retrieved the bodies of the victims.

Rescuers first extracted the body of Banganan from the tunnel and was declared dead at about 3:30 PM by Dr. Oliver Guadania.

After several minutes, the body of Api-it and Narciza were also recovered. (RDO)
