City to send 77 delegates to EAGA Games

THE Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) will hold a pre-departure orientation to Davao City's 77-member delegation for the 9th BIMP-Eaga Friendship Games set at 1 p.m. Friday at the Pinnacle Inn and Suites.

The Games is slated December 6 to 12 in Samarinda, East Kalimantan, Indonesia.

This was bared by PSC Commissioner Charles Raymond A. Maxey during on Thursday's Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at The Annex of SM City Davao.

He said Davao City, which is part of the three-city Team Philippines, will be fielding 56 athletes and 21 coaches and officials to the biennial Games.

Davao City, according to him, will compete in athletics, badminton, beach volleyball, karatedo, lawn tennis and sepak takraw.

"The Davao City's pencak silat team could not make it since athletes are mostly minors and there have been problems on documentation with the DSWD (Department of Social Welfare and Development), thus, Zamboanga City will be sending its pencak silat team instead," Maxey said, adding that Zamboanga will have 11 delegates to Indonesia.

Puerto Princesa-Palawan, for its part, will have 42 delegates including 32 athletes and 10 coaches and officials. The contingent will see action in archery, athletics, lawn tennis, table tennis and sepak takraw.

Maxey also said the PSC increased the athletes' allowance from US$100 to US$150 and that aside from the usual track suit the delegates get from the national sports agency, they will also issue bags, towels, shirts and socks.

Meanwhile, he said that it is going to be Brunei Darussalam's turn to host the 10th BIMP-Eaga Games in 2018. Considering that Davao del Norte is interested to bid for its hosting in 2018, he said they will just wait for Brunei to decide should they take the hosting or not. Should Brunei declines, only then can the Philippines bid to host the Games.

Davao City is defending champion in men's beach volleyball event having won the gold in the eighth edition of the Games in Labuan, Malaysia last 2014. The city also won several golds, silvers and bronzes through the athletics team led by decorated runner Sonny Wagdos.
