Duterte: Isis now connected with Maute group

PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte revealed Monday that the Jihadist militant group Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) is now affiliated with Philippine-based Maute terrorist group.

“The intelligence community advised me that ISIS has [been] connected with a group in the Philippines called the Maute. There is a waging war now in Lanao,” Duterte said at the inauguration of the 135 MW Circulating Fluidized Bed Combustion Power Plant held at the Malacañang's Rizal Hall.

Duterte made the statement following the recent clashes between the military and the Maute group in Lanao del Sur, when the bandit group reportedly occupied and raised the black flag of the ISIS at the abandoned municipal hall of Butig town.

Earlier in the day, Armed Forces spokesperson Brigadier General Restituto Padilla said the Lanao del Sur clashes resulted in the death of at least 19 Maute group members, while 13 soldiers were injured.

Restituto also confirmed that another military operation was launched before Monday dawn. He, however, refused to provide further details on the operations. (Sunnex)
