Comelec to start Talisay recount on Dec. 1

THE First Division of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) will start the recount of contested ballots for mayoralty post in Talisay City on December 1, 8:30 a.m., at the Electoral Contest Adjudication Department of the Comelec main office.

The recount will be conducted based on the protest filed by mayoralty candidate Shiela Yap Saratan against Mayor Nilo Jesus Antonio “Neil” Lizares.

In the order dated November 23, Comelec Commissioner Robert Lim said the election officer of Talisay City had already delivered the ballot boxes of the pilot protested precincts and these are securely stored at the Comelec Philpost warehouse.

The presiding commissioner also directed the creation of three recount committees composed of a chairperson, a recorder, and ballot box custodian.

Lizares won the race for mayor in the May 2016 elections with 28,440 votes, or a margin of 7,321 votes over Saratan’s 21,119 votes.

The recount proceeded after the Comelec First Division denied the motion of Lizares to dismiss the electoral protest filed by Saratan, wife of former mayor Eric Saratan.
