THE Banana Exports Industry Foundation Inc. (BEIF) awarded scholarships to selected children of banana workers in Davao Region.
BEIF is the corporate social responsibility arm of the Pilipino Banana Growers Exporters Association Inc. (PBGEA), which is a non-stock corporation that serves as the central coordinating agency for the development and the advancement of the banana export industry in the Philippines.
In the memorandum of agreement signed last May 25, a total of 15 high school and four college scholars for the school year 2015-2016 were presented. A short discussion on the details of the scholarship grant was also discussed by BEIF to the scholars and their parents.
Based on the MOA, two top qualifiers of the high school scholarship program will be awarded an annual tuition fee of not more than P30,000 and a monthly stipend of P1,000. The third and fourth top qualifiers will receive a grant for half of their annual tuition fee or P15,000 and a monthly stipend of P500. The rest of the scholars will be given a monthly stipend of P500.
For college scholars, they are encouraged to take agriculture-related courses or other courses applicable to the business operation of banana production and export. The tuition fee grant is P15,000 per semester and P1,000 monthly stipend.
But all scholars must be children of workers and growers of the member companies of BEIF and PBGEA. They also must maintain a general average of at least 85 percent.
Established in 1974, the Pilipino Banana Growers and Exporters Association Inc. and BEIF strongly believe in the tenets of responsible business in agriculture. The community projects of its CSR arm and the individual foundations of its members are geared towards the protection and rehabilitation of the environment, providing scholarships, educational facilities, health care services, water supply, roads, and livelihood opportunities.
