Vugt: The death penalty – to be restored?

THAT is the big question today. Should the death penalty be restored in our Constitution? President Duterte wants to restore the death penalty, why? He said, in order to be able to punish heinous crimes.

I believe, we never are allowed to kill people. That is against the Ten Commandments. Thou shall not kill. Put those criminals in jail, even for a life time. Then at least they have time enough to repent for their sins. If you kill them they cannot repent anymore for their sins.

I believe, only uncivilized people and uncivilized nations still believe in the death penalty. To me, it is clear that God did not create us so that we could kill each other. God is a God of mercy and love. He created us so that we could love each other and forgive each other’s sins, even heinous crimes.

If we allow our President to continue his presidency with this attitude, we become a nation of killers and that is inhuman and unchristian. We should protest against this by all means, even to the extent of impeaching our President, so that he could resign as president and go back to Davao as mayor and continue his extrajudicial killings for drug addicts.

A drug addict needs rehabilitation and also a drug pusher. The government has the responsibility to put up these rehabilitation centers where drug addicts and drug pushers could be rehabilitated at a low cost. Using drugs is an addiction and to get rid of that addiction you need a motivation. When you realize how bad it is for your health to use drugs then you will stop it. And this should be not for the time being but for good.

My own experience is this: I used to be a heavy smoker. One time, I got a heart attack. I went to the hospital and the doctor put me right away in the intensive care unit. When I was removed from there to another room, I was still smoking there. Then, when I asked the doctor why I got that heart attack, he said: one reason, may be, is smoking. When he said that, from that day on I stopped smoking. Of course, I often felt tempted to smoke again. I remember, I had a good friend that time who was also a heavy smoker. He stopped smoking that time. Then I said, when he can stop smoking, I can do it also.
