Police to skip taping of guns during holidays

ONE holiday tradition will come to an end for the police.

They will no longer tape the muzzles of their firearms ahead of Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve, on orders of PNP Director Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa.

According to Police Regional Office (PRO) 7 Director Noli Taliño, the national police chief believes that police officers are mature and responsible enough not to fire their guns indiscriminately during the holidays.

Taliño also directed provincial and city police directors to tell their personnel to refrain from using their gun during the holidays to avoid untoward incidents.

A police officer who is found guilty of indiscriminate firing and illegal discharge of firearm will face charges and may be dismissed, Taliño said.

“It’s the individual responsibility not only of our police officers but also of gun owners because if somebody will complain through text or such, he’ll be investigated because even if you clean your gun (after firing it), the gunpowder will still be there,” the regional director said.

The tapes were meant to discourage the bearer from pulling the trigger but these cannot stop bullets, Taliño said.

“You have to justify why you fired your gun,” he also said.

He made it clear that the order was not because of the police’s ongoing war on illegal drugs.

Parang asawa naming ‘yang baril. Kahit saan, katabi namin yung baril namin pangprotekta sa aming sarili laban sa hardened criminals na lumalaban sa pulis (We treat our guns like we do our wives. We keep it close wherever we go, to protect ourselves against hardened criminals who want to do us harm),” Taliño said.

He also ordered the strict monitoring on the use of firecrackers during the holidays.

Police stations under the Lapu-Lapu City Police Office (LLCPO) will inspect firecracker retailers who will start displaying their products on Dec. 16.

“During Oplan Tokhang when we visit houses, we also discourage the household against using firecrackers. If they really want to, then they should do it in safe areas,” Police Senior Insp. Marie Encio of the LLCPO said.
