A PROVINCIAL jail official died Wednesday afternoon, December 14, while another was wounded after they were attacked by unidentified gunmen in Clarin town, Misamis Occidental.
The jail official was identified as Chief Inspector Dionesio Lagas, operations officer of the Misamis Occidental Provincial Reformatory Jail (MOPRJ) in Oroquieta City while the jail’s computer technician, Jess Abao, was wounded.
Initial investigation showed that the victims were traveling from Ozamis City going to Tudela, Misamis Occidental, on board a Toyota Vios owned and driven by Lagas.
The victims bought computer spare parts and while passing through the intersection of Tinacla-an village of the under construction national highway, three suspects on board an XRM motorcycle without a plate number blocked their vehicle and began shooting at the victims.
Lagas succumbed to six gunshot wounds in the head, neck, left arm, and left hand and was rushed to Olegario General Hospital but did not reached the hospital alive.
Abao sustained lone gunshot wound at his left arm, a lacerated wound at his left chest and bruises of his both knees and was confined at the hospital in Ozamis City.
Police said the three suspects fled towards Tudela town.
Witnesses described one of the two gunmen behind the motorcycle’s driver as wearing blue slacks, a light blue polo shirt and a face dust mask. The other suspect was said to be wearing a pink T-shirt and unknown color of short pants. The motorcycle driver was not recognized by the witnesses.
The team from the Scene of the Crime Operations recovered five spent shells of caliber 45, one fired bullet of caliber .45, and five empty shells of caliber 9mm.
The Misamis Oriental Provincial Police Office is still establishing the motive of the incident.
