Valley farmers to benefit in new irrigation project

LA TRINIDAD farmers are expected to produce better strawberries and vegetables after the Department of Agriculture in partnership with the local government approved the construction of water tanks for irrigation.

Mayor Romeo Salda said the ground breaking ceremony of the Spring Development Project in Bayabas, Pico is boost for the farmers towards good vegetable and strawberry production.

u201cWe looked for sources and we identified Bodikewkew and Obodan Spring with the help of the stakeholders. This was proposed long time ago and now that it’s approved, our farmers from Barangays Bayabas, Pico, Betag towards Strawberry Swamp will benefit from this project,” Salda said.

Salda said there will be two main tanks constructed at the source which will be connected to 48 other tanks to supply clean water to farmers.

u201cWe would like to acknowledge and thank the effort of the group and the donors volunteering their lots for the project,” he continued.

The mayor added the project is worth P25 million with 10 percent as the counterpart of the LGU.

Meanwhile, the Federation of La Trinidad Valley Farmers Irrigators Association (FLATVAFIA) President Jumelyn Buya said the project help them achieve good agricultural practices towards production of high value crops and quality strawberries.

The project was proposed in 2013 by Municipal Agriculture Officer Fely Ticbaen.

Since the proposal was made, a series of consultations with lot owners, validation, and surveys were conducted to assure clean and quality irrigation water for the Valley farmers.
