Massive information campaign on prohibited firecrackers urged

THE Bacolod City Council approved a resolution requesting the Bacolod City Police Office (BCPO) Firearms and Explosives Unit (FEU) to conduct a massive information drive on prohibited firecrackers and pyrotechnics.

The resolution, authored by Councilor Sonya Verdeflor, chairperson on committee on trade, commerce, and industry, stated that in the celebration of the Yuletide season, especially during New Year’s Eve, many people are injured or killed while enjoying the revelries, including those in Bacolod City.

Most of the victims were careless in handling of firecrackers and pyrotechnics especially children, who suffered from injuries ranging from burns to amputation of legs and fingers, it added.

Verdeflor said most victims are not aware of the explosives powder contents considered damaging to life and property.

“To prevent firecracker incidents resulting to severe injuries, it is incumbent upon the proper authorities especially the FEU to conduct massive information campaign on prohibited firecrackers and pyrotechnics,” the resolution added.

Verdeflor said the FEU has the sole authority to explain comprehensively what are the allowable powder and chemical content on firecrackers and what are the prohibited ones.

If the public is guided accordingly on the powder contents, people could take extra precaution to prevent injuries caused by firecrackers and pyrotechnics, she the councilor added.
