Sueno to BJMP: Double effort to avoid jail break on holidays

LOCAL Government Secretary Ismael Sueno sought Wednesday the assurance from the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) that they will conduct regular inspection and accounting of prisoners in all the detention facilities under its jurisdiction to avoid jail break during the holidays.

"The BJMP should not let its guard down, especially now that everyone is busy with their own preparations for Christmas,” Sueno told BJMP director Chief Superintendent Seradin Barreto.

Sueno made the statement following the escape of an inmate of the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) identified as Manuel Paril Jr. by breaking one of the access doors of their detention building.

Paril was reportedly convicted of homicide and frustrated homicide by a Muntinlupa City court.

Aside from the incident involving Paril, Sueno also mentioned about the four South Cotabato jail inmates facing charges related to illegal drugs who tried to escape by attempting to destroy their cells' concrete walls using spoons and forks.

He said the detention facility temporarily refused to accept visitors due to the failed escape attempt.

With this, Sueno reminded the BJMP to intensify enforcement of rules and regulations to all detention facility in the country.

He said the BJMP should also conduct operations inside the jail for the deterrence of illegal drugs proliferation inside their facility. (Sunnex)
