‘Public fireworks safer option’

GOV. Hilario Davide urged Cebu local government units (LGU) to hold fireworks display, which is more safe, than allow citizens to play with firecrackers in their neighborhoods, which is more dangerous.

Davide admitted that fireworks display is more expensive, but safer than allowing citizens to play with firecrackers.

“My (idea) is really in one area lang where everybody can watch the fireworks, the countdown,” said Davide, adding that it will be safer if people will just watch the fireworks instead.

An LGU-sponsored firework display is better and safer than letting people play firecrackers in the street. He said the one playing and watching is prone to injury.

Code White

Provincial Health Office (PHO) Head Rene Catan, who declared all Cebu hospitals to be under Code White this Dec. 23, urged LGUs to regulate the use of firecrackers to lessen fireworks-related accidents.

He also urged LGUs to identify a particular place in the community, or a park, where they can have fireworks display for residents to watch.

Catan said the park or any open space is ideal to have fireworks rather than near houses made of light materials like nipa or bamboo slats.

Mamili ta og maayo nga klase sa nga (We’ll choose quality) fireworks,” Catan said.

Seized

Meanwhile, assorted firecrackers were confiscated in a roving inspection conducted in El Filibusterismo St., Barangay Ermita, Cebu City, last Dec. 21.

Chief Insp. Clark Arriola of Carbon Police Station led the operation in monitoring illegal display and selling of firecrackers in the area.

Among the confiscated firecrackers were 71 pieces of “eight shot plastic disc cap” and 50 pieces of baby rockets, with an estimated value of P900.

The recovered firecrackers are till with the police, waiting for possible order of proper disposal.

In an interview, Arriola emphasized that the confiscation of firecrackers is for safety.

The city has an existing ordinance setting the South Road Properties (SRP) as the venue for sale of firecrackers while pyrotechnic devices can only be displayed in malls.

For small-time sellers, Arriola adviced them to sell products to its exact venue to avoid confiscation. USJR Intern Rowinmar Espinosa
