Public urged to stay alert, get weather updates from gov't sites

MALACAÑANG on Monday advised the public to remain vigilant and look for the weather updates at the website of the state weather bureau and other concern agencies.

Communications Secretary Martin Andanar issued the statement at the onslaught of Typhoon Nina (international name Nock-Ten).

"We ask the public to stay alert regarding Typhoon Nina," Andanar said in a statement.

"We advise the public to get regular updates from the Pagasa (Philippine Atmospheric, Geolophysical and Astronomical Services Administration) and other government websites or social media accounts," he added.

Andanar said the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) continues to monitor the typhoon.

He said that the DSWD has activated its Response Clusters to monitor and facilitate emergency response humanitarian assistance.

The DSWD has packed around 38,801 family food packs for those who will be hit by the typhoon. 18,923 relief goods are ready for allocations while the 20,878 are ready for delivery to different field offices.

8th landfall

In its latest weather bulletin, Pagasa said Typhoon Nina has made its 8th landfall over Lubang Island, Occidental Mindoro on Monday afternoon.

At 11.40 a.m. Monday, the weather bureau recorded the 7th landfall of Typhoon Nina over Batangas City.

The typhoon made its sixth landfall over Tingloy Island, Batangas at 10 a.m. Its fifth landfall is over Verde Island in Batangas City, recorded around 9:15 a.m.

According to the Pagasa weather bulletin issued at 11 a.m. today, Nina has slightly weakened after making landfall over Tingloy, Batangas.

Pagasa said that its estimated rainfall amount is from moderate to heavy within the 400 km diameter of the typhoon.

On December 25, the typhoon made landfall twice, in Bato, Catanduanes around 6:30 p.m. and in Sagnay, Camarines Sur at about 9:30 p.m.

The typhoon, according to the bureau, will exit in the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Wednesday morning, December 28. (Sunnex)
