CPDRC promises a more comfortable visit for families on New Year’s Day

THE Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center (CPDRC) will again hold a Family Day for the inmates on Monday.

But this time, the jail management promised families that going inside the jail will be more convenient for them.

Visitors will be made to wait inside the jail compound, and not on the streets, while they go through screening and body search.

Acting Gov. Agnes Magpale reacted to reports that during the Family Day last Dec. 24, the visitors crowded the streets surrounding the jail while waiting for their turn to get inside.

Some were allowed to enter by 3:30 p.m. yet or 30 minutes before the visiting hours ended.

Magpale said visitors will go through the same checks and will have to follow the same rules as those implemented during the Dec. 24 event.

Only three visitors per inmate will be allowed, and they are not allowed to bring ice cream, cake, cell phone, laptop and other contraband.

They should bring enough food for three to four persons and as much as possible, they should wear slippers for easy inspection.

Visiting hours is from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. but the inspection will start at 7:30 a.m.

Magpale called up acting jail warden Dr. Gil Macato yesterday and told him to let visitors stay inside the facility, and not outside, while being searched.

She also asked Macato if he needs additional blue guards, but the acting warden said they can manage.

Magpale granted the jail personnel’s request to hold the Family Day to Jan. 2 instead of Jan. 1 so they will have time to rest since personnel will be sleeping late on New Year’s Eve.

When asked where policemen from the Provincial Public Service Company (PPSC) will position themselves, Magpale said: “I leave that to him (Macato) to decide as long as everything is in order.”

Last Dec. 24, the PPSC policemen were stationed outside the jail compound, in the same area where the visitors converged.
