New Year shooting claims 2, injures 1

TWO men were killed while a teenager was injured in separate shooting incidents in Naga City during the New Year celebration.

The revelry of the residents in Barangay Central Poblacion was interrupted when two men, Jerome Mahinay and Paul Bartido, were killed in a shootout that occurred two hours before Jan. 1.

PO3 Gilmer Noval of Naga Police Station told reporters that Mahinay was operating a “peryahan” (amusement fair) when Bartido suddenly came and asked for money so he could buy firecrackers.

But Mahinay reportedly refused to give money to Bartido, who then left the area.

A few minutes later, an armed Bartido came back to Mahinay’s stall with three others, including Ryan Tabuelon, 41.

Mahinay tried to pacify the four men but Bartido and his cohorts attacked him, which resulted to his death.

However, Bartido was also killed when Mahinay tried to fight his attackers with a pistol.

Police are still conducting further investigation to determine the identities of Bartido’s two other cohorts.

Meanwhile, a 14-year-old boy was hurt after he was shot by a fellow teenager in Barangay Tuyan at dawn of New Year’s Day.

Local police said the boy sustained a gunshot wound on his right arm.

Police are still trying to determine the motive behind the shooting.
