Pelayo: Pampanga’s good and bad of 2016

GOOD: Clark airport is becoming one of the fastest growing airstrip in the country today. Thanks to the new style of leadership, courtesy of its newest president, Alex Cauguiran. As of recent, Philippine Air Lines kicked off year 2017 with a new route to Incheon, South Korea via Clark. Soon, more flights will come in this very capable airport.

Bad: Around 500 employees in Fontana Casino have been displaced by the closure of the Leisure Park and casino inside Clark. The cease and desist order came in 18 days before Christmas leaving its workers a blue holiday season.

Good: Barangay Dolores in City of San Fernando got its first historic record of winning a grand slam in the Giant Lantern Festival (Ligligan Parul) after it came out a champion for three consecutive years. Dolores brought the bacon home to the tune of P150,000.

Bad: The vector-borne disease is seasonal no more. The province recorded a spike in dengue cases this year. According to the Regional Epidemiology Surveillance Unit of DOH 3, the cases of dengue fever went up by 33 percent with at least 5 deaths reported.

Good: The coffin capital of the Philippines in the small town of Santo Tomas is far from dying. The prediction of President Rodrigo Duterte became real when he called the attention of the casket makers to get ready because there will be a demand for it during his term. It is believed that Sto. Tomas accounts for about 70 percent of the market in PH with an average output of more than 20,000 coffins in a month. It’s not a dying business after all.

Bad: Low-lying villages in towns continue to be plagued by flooding during rainy season in Pampanga. Even if there’s no typhoon, monsoon rains seemed enough to cover the land with flood water. The same locations were affected during that season including San Simon, Masantol, Macabebe, Guagua, Minalin, San Luis, Lubao, San Fernando, Bacolor, and Mexico.

Good: When it rains, it really does pour. The year 2016 has been great for Angeles City Mayor Ed Pamintuan. He won the re-election by a landslide against Senator and action star Lito Lapid in the May election. He’s been elected as President of the League of Cities of the Philippines taking the post from QC Mayor Herbert Bautista. Pamintuan has also been chosen to be an adviser of the peace panel during the peace talks between the government and the rebels which was held in Norway. And before the year ended, President Rodrigo Roa Duterte appointed EdPam as the chairperson of the Regional Development Council in Central Luzon. He’s been pressing the right buttons.

May all of us have a great year ahead!
