Manileña wins Miss Earth Philippines 2015

MANILEÑA beauty Angelia Gabrena Ong bested 37 other entrants to win the Miss Earth Philippines 2015 crown.

Held Sunday evening at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, Miss Earth 2014 Jamie Herrell, who won the local competition last year, crowned Ong, a 24-year-old marketing management student from De La Salle-College of St. Benilde.

Ong impressed the judges when asked by singer-actress Zsa Zsa Padilla on her views on same-sex marriage, which recently hogged media headlines after a gay lawyer asked the Supreme Court to make it legal in the Philippines.

"I think it really depends to the person, if he or she believes in (same) sex marriage. But for me, if the person feels that he or she needs to be married to show his or her love, then I don’t mind having (same) sex marriage. If you feel that that is love, then so be it," Ong said.

Actor Jake Cuenca's ex-girlfriend, model Chanel Olive Thomas, was hailed Miss Philippines Earth-Air 2015.

The rest of the winners are Negros Oriental native Catherin Joy Marin (Miss Philippines Earth-Water), Carla Angela Valderrama (Miss Philippines Earth-Fire), and Ilonggo beauty Jona Sweett (Miss Philippines Earth-Eco Tourism).

Other contestants who made it in the Top 10 are Jian Salazar from Albay, Alyanna Mikaela Cagandahan from Laguna, Mitsume Aguilar from Misamis Oriental, Beatrice Alvarez from Cagayan de Oro City and Diana Mackey from Cabanatuan City, Nueva Ecija.

The pageant was hosted by Miss Earth 2008 Karla Henry, Miss Philippines Earth-Air 2006 Ginger Conejero and Kapamilya talent Robi Domingo. (Sunnex)
