THE first Davao Region Scuaa Meet 2017 will kick off on January 25 to 28 at the Davao Oriental State College of Science and Technology in Mati City, Davao Oriental.

University of Southeastern Philippines (Usep) sports director Jose Alther Rivera, in a Facebook chat with SunStar Davao Friday, January 6, said Usep will send two teams to the regional meet, Teams A and B, since it has five campuses.

Rivera, who is also a trainer of the Usep Obrero athletics team, said five state universities will vie for honors in the qualifying meet for the National Scuaa Meet.

"The regionals will serve as selection for the region's delegation to the nationals on February 19 to 24 at Batangas State University," he said.

Events entered are athletics, arnis, basketball, badminton, beach volleyball, chess, karatedo, baseball, softball, swimming, volleyball, dance sports and sepak takraw.

Usep A and B teams will have a total of 336 athletes for the Mati sportsfest.

Aside from Usep and DOSCST, the Davao Norte State College, Compostela valley State College and Southern Philippines Agri-Business and Marine and Aquatic School of Technology.

The University of the Philippines (UP) Mindanao, however, is reportedly not joining the sportsfest.

This year's inaugural staging of the regional meet is organized by the Philippine Association of State Universities and Colleges (Pasuc) Davao Region president Dr. Jonathan Bayogan of DNSC.
