'Auring' weakens after making landfall in Siargao Island

TROPICAL depression Auring weakened after making landfall in Siargao Island, the state weather bureau said on Sunday, January 8.

In its 8:00 p.m. weather bulletin, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said the typhoon has maximum sustained winds of 45 kilometers per hour (kph) and gustiness of up to 75 kph.

Pagasa also said the center of the tropical depression is at west northwest of Surigao City, Surigao del Norte.

Pagasa said that Cuyo Island is still under Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal (TCWS) Number 1.

Also under TCWS Number 1 are Bohol, Siquijor, Negros Provinces, Southern Leyte, Cebu including Camotes Island, Guimaras, southern part of Iloilo, southern part of Antique, Agusan del Norte, Surigao del Norte including Siargao Island, Dinagat Province, Misamis Oriental and Camiguin.

Residents in the said area are alerted to landslides and flashfloods.

Pagasa also advised fisherfolks and those with smaller seacrafts not to travel over the eastern seaboard of Visayas and of Mindanao. (Sunnex)
